Follow Ancient Paths, Following Historical Figures and Events
According to Matthew’s Gospel, during the Galilean ministry, Jesus preached in Korazim and upon leaving, reproached the town for its failure to repent. He and the disciples perhaps then descended a trail to his dwelling in Capernaum on the shore of the Sea of Galilee. Both Korazim and Capernaum were pilgrimage sites for centuries, and today are part of the Israel National Park system. Both are near the Mount of Beatitudes, 10 miles north of the resort city of Tiberias, and amidst a choice of cafes, inns and B&Bs.
Visitor-friendly Korazim offers a magnificent panorama of the Sea of Galilee. The restored village includes dwellings, a ritual bath, olive presses, and a magnificent 4th century synagogue. Its so-called Moses seat may have been used for public readings of the Torah. Perhaps melodies like those we learned for Bar or Bat Mitzva were heard first here and at synagogues in the vicinity. A natural walking path leaves the site and follows Wadi Korazim 4 kilometers downhill through quiet countryside to Capernaum.

Join us, the Israel Nature and Heritage Foundation of America and its partners, in revitalizing this trail. Enhancing this path, making it wheelchair-accessible, will enable more visitors to experience authentic spiritual landscapes and history using the soles of their feet and the touch of their hands. They will stroll peacefully past Orchard Frankincense, fields of grain, and archeological findings from the vicinity. The path will include shade trees and stops along the way, with drinking water and rest room facilities.
